The Darkwind thieves guild is the main body of organized crime in the city of New Halagard. They run rackets, thieving, extorting, with side orders of murder and intrigue. They like to avoid violence when they can, preferring to instead rely on fear, blackmail, and intimidation, as people can generally pay their gambling debts back faster when the have two working knees; not to mention, of course, that too much violence tends to attract the attention of the Mailed Fist.
The Darkwinders don’t take kindly to competition, however, and are constantly rooting out independent thieves and shaking them down to either join or pay tribute. As far as the Darkwinders are concerned, you either work with them or for them. Those who break the rules are simply killed.
The Darkwinders operate city-wide, and at times have come into conflict with some of the more corrupt City Wardens (to say nothing of the law). With many of the wardens there is a begrudging truce, as the Darkwinders are more powerful than any single warden (except possibly Ramirez). However, the wardens as a group hold significant influence over the City Watch and have some ability to direct the Mailed Fist, which could make life very uncomfortable for the individual members of the Darkwind guild.
